The clavinet

The Clavinet

The clavinet is an electric piano, and it was produced in West Germany from 1964 and until the early 1980's, when Germany was still split in two. It was produced by the German company Hohner, and had 60 keys, with a playing range from F1 to E6.

Unlike the traditional piano, the clavinet had a very bright staccato sound which made it popular in funk, disco, rock and reggae music. If you want to learn more about the piano, check out our article about learning to play the piano.
