About Alastair M.

Alastair is a dedicated performer and teacher, having studied music at Oxford University and singing at the Guildhall School of Music, and enjoys sharing his knowledge with others through technique and repertoire. He has performed with the choruses of English National Opera and Welsh National Opera in over 25 productions, as well as having worked with the Netherlands Radio Choir, BBC Singers, and other professional groups. In addition, Alastair has performed as a soloist on the opera stage and in the concert hall, both in the UK and abroad. He is also a pianist with Grade 8 Distinction, enabling him to accompany his students and teach piano to beginners.

He will tailor his lessons to each pupil's individual needs, and is familiar with a large amount of the Classical and Musical Theatre repertoire. He has a welcoming, engaging manner, and takes time clearly to explain the necessary aspects of musicality and vocal technique during his lessons.

Alastair is also fluent in German, having lived in Germany as a child, and has found this to be a benefit in his performing and teaching.

A bit about the lessons:

1) The first lesson always begins with finding out a little about the pupils’ backgrounds and whether they’ve done much singing before. If they have - what it is they’ve sung before and what they’d like to achieve from this lesson and any future ones. Alastair will then tell them about his background and approach, followed by some basic warm ups. They will then work on either something the student has brought, or a song of his suggestion.

2) Alastair tries to encourage his pupils to do a little bit of singing each day - even if it’s only 10 minutes! If taking face-to-face lessons, Alastair will write a few things to work on in a notebook, or if online he will send a follow up message with some pointers.

3) Alastair finds the structure of the Associated Board grades to be useful in his teaching, and many of his students have gone on to take the exams.

Alastair has taught pupils of all ages and stages, from children aged 7 to adults, and believes in helping people achieve their best singing in the most enjoyable manner possible.
