About Alex C
Alex is an enthusiastic, versatile musician, and widely experienced as a pianist, flautist, singer, teacher, performer, accompanist, and ensemble player. He recently graduated from the University of Birmingham with a first-class honours degree in music, and has several years’ experience performing in a great variety of settings.
Alex was the solo flute prize winner at the summer FluteFest course in Wales 2018, winner of the Irene Martin Prize for Pianoforte in 2015, and was a regional finalist in the Aireborough Rotary Young Musician Competition in 2013.
In 2015, he achieved distinctions in both his ABRSM grade 8 flute and piano examinations, and has gone on to further his skills throughout university and in the professional field. He has taught private instrumental lessons alongside his own studies for several years, and has been a professional tutor with Whitehouse Music Service in Alvechurch since 2018.
Teaching in Flute and Piano
Alex teaches both piano and flute to students of all ages and abilities from complete beginners to advanced. He takes a student-driven approach to lessons, working on the individual’s own goals and aspirations for music making, whether that be sitting classical examinations, entering for competitions, developing improvisation skills, or simply making music for pleasure.
Regardless of genre or aspirations, Alex always encourages healthy, tension-free technique and posture with both instruments, to give each student the best chance at succeeding musically. Lessons will include reading music, playing pieces, and navigating said instrument with correct fingerings. He also aspires to give a thorough, broad, and well-rounded musical education to his students, so music theory, aural skills, playing expressively, contextual understanding, and performance practice are incorporated throughout lessons and whilst learning music. He is also able to offer tuition in GCSE and A-level syllabuses, as well as just music theory if a student so desires.
Alex mostly specialises in classical music and pop, but does have experience playing and teaching in jazz and rock styles, as well as familiarity in composition and song-writing.
In your first lesson, Alex will spend some time getting to know a bit about you, why you wish to learn your instrument, and about your musical background. From there, lessons will be tailored to the individual in a friendly, fun environment, and Alex will have you working on and making music in as short a time as possible.
Complete beginners need bring only themselves to their first lesson, and (in the case of flute students) their instrument. From there, books and educational resources will be recommended for future lessons. He is also able to offer advice on purchasing a good quality beginner flute or piano of your own.
