About Avital Raz

Avital has been teaching singing for over twenty years. She started out singing classical music and has a degree in performance and composition from the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance. After some experience in opera, she moved to Varanasi, India where she became mesmerised with the improvisational style of Indian Music. After years of singing from scores, improvising also gave Avital a new freedom to write her own songs. She has seven albums of her own music to date and two with acclaimed world music band Rafiki Jazz.
Such a wealth of diverse experience gives her the ability to teach many different vocal styles. She is interested in helping the student find what excites them and believes that developing the voice can influence authentic self expression on profound levels.

Teaching in Voice
First we determine what the student is interested in developing. For some it is more confidence and strength in singing, for some better musicianship skills as well and some are particularly interested in Indian Classical Music which I specialise in. We do some simple vocal exercises that I sing and ask the student to repeat to understand their basic level of musical and vocal ability. I then ask them to sing a song they like.

I give structured exercises for practice every lesson. I make it clear that we will continue doing the exercises until they are fluent. I encourage them to record and write down the exercises. The exercises I teach not only strengthen the voice, breath control and pitch but also teach the student patterns that will later help them improvise and generally develop their musical ear through different scales and rhythms.

Genre
Avital teaches all styles of singing; Classical, folk, singer -songwriter, ‘world music’ , improvisation and specialises in Indian Classical Music and song writing.

First lesson
First lesson I like to make a cup of tea and start with a chat to determine what the student is interested in developing, what kind of music moves them and how they feel about their voice. We will do a little physical warm up (nothing too strenuous) and do some simple vocal exercises that I sing and ask the student to repeat after me to understand their basic level of musical and vocal ability. I then ask them to sing a song they like.
