About Benjamin I.

If you’re looking for a fun, energetic, patient, professional music tutor then Benjamin is an ideal teacher for you. Having received a Distinction in his MMus Instrumental Performance (Violin) from Royal Birmingham Conservatoire along with a BA (Hons) in Mathematics and Music from Royal Holloway, University of London, he is a highly trained and accomplished musician. Benjamin has been classically trained from a young age, starting the piano at age 5 and Violin aged 7. Benjamin has several years’ experience of personal training in addition to teaching experience. As a violinist, he has had the privilege of performing alongside orchestras such as the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, London Mozart Players and is a previous member of the National Youth Orchestra of Wales, giving him the opportunity to perform in major concert halls across the UK. Having specifically chosen teaching modules as part of his Master’s degree, he has developed a teaching method that encompasses numerous styles of teaching, with the sole aim of developing whole-rounded musicians, not instrumentalists. Benjamin also currently works for a music service teaching over 40 students stringed instruments and is a volunteer teacher with the ARCO Project, providing free online violin lessons to children and young adults in Soweto, South Africa and Chennai, India.

As a passionate musician, Benjamin’s aim is to share these passions with his students by providing an environment where students can fulfil their potential. Understanding that each student is different, he can adapt lessons to each student so that each lesson is unique and tailor-made to suit their needs.

Violin/Viola Lessons

Benjamin teaches Violin/Viola from beginners to advanced students from ages 5 and up, ensuring that each student achieves what they want from the instrument. Although lessons are based on the Classical style, Benjamin is happy to create lessons focusing on the styles that his students would like to learn.

Violin/Viola lessons with Benjamin would include:
• A focus on a strong technical foundation from the outset.
• Providing the platform to perform without fear of making mistakes.
• Promoting a good sound and tone throughout.
• Developing methods for warming up and practising.
• Guided advice on pieces from both the student and teacher.
• Creating whole-rounded musicians, by developing musical knowledge and understanding music theory.
• Option of taking ABRSM or Trinity graded exams.

Piano Lessons

Benjamin teaches Piano from beginners to intermediate students from ages 5 and up, ensuring that each student achieves what they want from the instrument. Although lessons are based on the Classical style, Benjamin is happy to create lessons focusing on the styles that his students would like to learn.

Piano lessons with Benjamin would include:
• A focus on a strong posture and technique from the outset.
• Providing the platform to perform without fear of making mistakes.
• Developing methods for warming up and practising.
• Guided advice on pieces from both the student and teacher.
• Creating whole-rounded musicians, by developing musical knowledge and understanding music theory.
• Option of taking ABRSM or Trinity graded exams.

Music Theory

Benjamin teaches from ages 7 upwards and offers theory lessons guided by the ABRSM syllabus to develop your general musicianship skills.

Theory lessons would include:
• Learning and understanding the relationship between the notes and pieces.
• Developing your ability to identify keys, notes, chord structure, harmony.
• ABRSM theory books.
• Applying the knowledge to pieces that are being studied.

Genres

Benjamin teaches all genres but mainly specialises in classical music. He is happy to provide lessons in repertoire that the student wants to learn as he believes it is important for them to enjoy what they are playing.

First Lesson

The first lesson will consist of a short chat at the beginning of the lesson so that Benjamin can understand what the student would like to achieve from the lessons. For beginners he will introduce a taster lesson for the student, covering all the basic knowledge for their instrument in a fun and engaging manner. For all other students, Benjamin would like them to play a piece they enjoy playing so that he can understand and gauge their ability, to provide a plan for ongoing lessons.

Beginners

For the first Violin/Viola/Piano lessons, an instrument, bow and case would be necessary for the first lesson. The teacher would be more than happy to advise on places to purchase an instrument if required. The student must have access to their own instrument, to be able to practice between lessons and get used to the instrument they will be playing. Benjamin will ensure that the first lessons will be fun and engaging and that the student does not feel overwhelmed!!
