About David M

David is as a friendly, experienced and skilled freelance musician, composer and workshop facilitator, working in schools, probation units, community centres and prisons. He has broad experience working in education, tutoring guitar and music theory privately, teaching as an Associate Lecturer in Computer Music Design at Birmingham BIMM.

David studied BA Music at Oxford University, going on to study MA Composition at Manchester University, and is currently the recipient of Trinity Laban's Learning and Participation Fellowship in Music.

Teaching in Guitar, Music Theory, and Composition
David has been playing guitar for more than a decade, and has experience playing in a wide variety of ensembles, including rock, jazz, folk, blues, pit bands for musicals, contemporary classical and experimental. He plays regularly in bands around Manchester and the northwest.

Genre
David has experience and knowledge in a range of guitar genres and styles. Whether you’re interested in lead, rhythm, fingerpicking, soloing, improvising, or writing your own music, David will be able to help you develop your skills and confidence.

David also has a deep and broad knowledge of music theory. This includes classical theory, having studied for an undergraduate degree focusing on classical music analysis and composition, and contemporary popular music techniques, such as writing effective chord progressions, song structure, and jazz, folk and blues harmony.

David also works as a composer for theatre, film and concerts. The focus of his Master's degree was Electroacoustic Music and Interactive Media, and much of his work incorporates experimental electronic.

First lesson
Lessons with David are very flexible to the interests of the learner, and time will be taken in the first lesson to discuss the student’s musical interests and long term learning goals.

Beginners
For beginners on guitar, a first lesson will be spent looking at the basics of guitar, including holding and tuning the guitar and getting a clear sound from your instrument. It is preferable for students to have their own guitar.

For beginners in music theory and composition, the first lesson will be spent looking at the fundamentals of music, looking at examples of music relevant to the student’s interest, and putting the principles learnt in the lesson to work in exerci...
