About Deborah F

Deborah is a professional singer and singing / flute teacher. She gained her Grade 8 flute when she was fourteen and took up singing seriously when she was twenty while studying for a BMus (Hons) Degree at Royal Holloway College, London University. She later did a post-graduate singing course at Trinity College of Music and has studied with various teachers, including Dr. Jane Manning, Lillian Watson and Paul Farrington. From her own teachers, she has learned what works and what does not.

She has thirty years of experience in teaching singing and flute, privately and in different institutions (schools, theatre schools, adult education). Her approach is holistic, relaxed and non judgemental. She likes to find out what a pupil can do and build on that, rather than focus on what they cannot yet do. Pupils enjoy her lessons as they are fun and she is friendly, understanding and empathetic: they can be themselves with her. Being a performer means that she is able to inspire her pupils and help them with interpretation, expression, style and presentation. She is flexible as to what music her pupils would like to work on and able to enter them for exams and festivals, with a high success rate.

Teaching in vocals
Deborah teaches singing from beginners to advanced pupils for ages six upwards. She has an excellent ear and diagnostic ability and devises exercises tailored to the individual. She prides herself on being able to bring out a pupil’s own voice rather than imposing a sound onto it: she promises to help beginner pupils free their own voice and develop it with a safe technique. With more experienced pupils, if they have developed vocal problems, she hopes to be able to undo them and rebuild the voice, encouraging the pupil to pursue new, healthier habits. For experienced or advanced pupils with no problems, she will build on their current abilities and help polish their sound.

Vocal lessons with Deborah include:
- Breathing and relaxation exercises, paying attention to posture
- Exercises which focus on connecting the voice to the breadth, strength, clarity, freedom and evenness of tone, articulation and flexibility
- Working on songs/arias on a technical and musical level, and then working on style, interpretation and presentation
- Music reading and ear training if required
