About Elinor C A

Elinor is a violinist/fiddle player based in Newcastle Upon Tyne. She has a BA in Folk and Traditional Music (with a major specialism in performance) and is an experienced and skilled musician, with a wealth of knowledge in instrumental technique and musical understanding. Elinor is able to teach students of all ages and abilities, and has experience teaching in both a one to one and a group setting.

Elinor believes that the key to succeeding in developing music skills comes from enjoyment and inspiration. If a student isn't getting enjoyment from what they are doing, it becomes more difficult to progress in the long term. Developing skills requires practice and motivation, which tend to come most easily if a student is inspired to learn and is gaining enjoyment from their learning. She can teach music by notation as well as by ear, or a mix of the two, depending on what is most suitable for the student. To support this learning, she will also tailor exercises and pieces to help students develop in areas which they tend to struggle in.

Teaching in Violin
Elinor teaches violin/fiddle and voice to all ages and abilities. She believes in giving students agency to develop their own musical style, and to work on the music they enjoy. She is also confident in providing students with a range of stimulus to aid them in finding their own style and musical preferences.

A typical lesson could include:
- Learning new repertoire
- Working to improve specific techniques- such as bowing, utilising different positions, improving intonation
- Developing a range of musical skills and understandings of the music they are playing
- Advice on playing in different settings

Absolute beginner lessons could include:
- Learning about the instrument/style
- Developing skills such as reading music, playing by ear, understanding how this translates to the instrument

Teaching in Singing
Elinor teaches vocal repertoire and technique, mainly from the folk genre. A lesson would typically include vocal warm ups for strengthening the voice and developing specific technique, considering repertoire and stylistic interpretations of the repertoire, developing arrangements of songs to suit the repertoire/singer. Singing can be taught by ear or by notation, lyrics sheets can also be provided.
