About Emma G.
Emma is a professional saxophonist working in the music industry with 10 years of teaching experience. She studied at Leeds College of Music (where she gained a Diploma in Higher Education in Music) and London Centre of Contemporary Music (where she gained a 1st Class BMus Hons) and has learnt from some amazing industry professionals including Dave O'Higgins (Jamie Cullum, Frank Sinatra) and Jim Corry (Jamiroquai). She loves sharing her passion for music with her students and always caters each lesson to the individual student. She views music as a language, and teaches it as such - with an emphasis on playing by ear and understanding the theory as well as 'reading the dots'.
Teaching in Saxophone
Emma teaches saxophone to students of all ages and abilities. She focuses heavily on playing by ear and learning to work out songs for yourself, treating music as a language in which the goal is to become fluent. She encourages her students to work on their tone, as well as their overall understanding of music theory in order to enhance their ability to play by ear and improvise. She offers ABRSM Grades (both Classical and Jazz) and has had many students achieving success in these exams.
Emma teaches all genres, but specialises in Jazz, Pop, Soul and House/DJ-Sax.
A first lesson with Emma will involve getting to know each other, so Emma can understand your motivation behind learning, your goals and aspirations, your current level of playing and your preferred style of music. Then we'll start with a warm up that's appropriate to your level, whether you are a complete newbie to the sax or have already achieved all your grades and are looking to progress further. Emma's lessons are very relaxed and are always catered to each individual student – she rarely uses books and prefers instead to write notes during each lesson that the student can take home to practise and reflect on.
If you are a complete beginner, don't panic! For your first lesson all you will need is your instrument and your lovely self. If you would like to bring along your own notepad of lined or manuscript paper then that is totally fine too.
