About Iain D.

Iain is a professional guitarist/musician based in Bristol who focuses on:
-Private Guitar Tuition
-Songwriting
-Composition
-Production

Iain’s work in helping others achieve their own musical goals is rooted in his own drive and passion for creativity and self expression through the guitar and music creation. Iain was self taught for many years before pursuing higher education in music to aid in reaching his musical goals, having achieved:
BA (Hons) Degree in Professional Musicianship on Guitar at the Bristol Institute of Modern Music (2012)
Master’s MMus Degree in Composition at Bath Spa University (2014)

While pursuing his education Iain began to teach guitar in education establishments around the Southwest of England such as:
-Bristol Rock Centre
-Bath College
-Bristol Institute of Modern Music
-Academy of Sound and Music (Swindon)
-Academy of Sound and Music (Online)

Teaching In Guitar
Iain has taught many students over a wide range of ages and skill levels, maintaining an attitude that music’s focus should be about joy and self expression, not purely technicality and theory.

A typical lesson with Iain involves figuring out what each student is looking to achieve specifically, whether it may be learning:
-Songs/Riffs/Licks
-Playing Styles (Rock, Metal, Blues, Pop, Jazz, Classical, Country etc.)
-Playing Techniques (Legato, Alternate/Economy/Sweep/Hybrid Picking, Vibrato etc.)
-Songwriting/Composition (Structure, Melody, Chord Progressions, Part Construction etc.)
-Music Theory (Intervals, Modes, Harmony, Notation/Sight Reading etc.)

All this while keeping in mind a larger goal of where the student sees themselves as a future musician.

In more recent years Iain has delved into the world of music recording and production, using the Logic Pro X DAW specifically, and is more than happy help others in pursuing that same journey.

Genre

Iain specialises in rock and metal guitar/writing styles, playing in a metal band himself, however he is well versed in many genres of music (see Style in “Teaching in Guitar” section above).

First lesson
The first lesson with Iain is mainly focused on Iain getting to know the student:
-What music/bands/players do they like?
-Play a riff/song/piece that demonstrates their current skill level.
-What is it they’re hoping to achieve through getting lessons?

Determining these things will then allow Iain to give the student a short task or exercise to practice for the subsequent lesson while thinking forward to building future exercises, tasks and practice regimes that will best fit that student specifically.

Beginners
Although Iain tends to work with older and more advanced students, beginners should not be hesitant in the slightest about approaching him for lessons. He still remembers what it is to be a beginner and can alter his teaching approach and style to accommodate students of that level, always striving to have an empathetic approach to teaching.
