About James Iain C
Graduating from Leeds College of Music in 2013, James gained a 2:1 degree in Popular Music and Performance. He has built up over 10 years’ experience of private tutoring. James favours the Rock School syllabus for teaching Electric Guitar and Bass Guitar as they are practical based, but he also includes the use of his knowledge from his Grade 5 music theory qualification to aid his students learning. Through his one-to-one teachings James developed his understanding of the individuals learning needs and the application of different teaching techniques.
Alongside this, James has worked in and developed group lessons and workshops in a variety of private and educational organisations. This included a performance based summer school programme and a classical guitar workshop that James would run weekly in which he taught the early stages of the ABRSM classical guitar syllabus to a mixed group.
James says that music has helped him achieve things beyond what he thought possible for himself and he is passionate about helping others find there their own way into it. He has been a student of music himself from a young age and a strong believer that you never stop learning.
Performing with various acts over the years, some of his notable performances (in addition to regular venues such as Leeds, Manchester, London and Glasgow) have included:
Leeds & Reading festivals
The Royal Albert Hall
Performances throughout North America
Teaching in Bass Guitar
James teaches the bass guitar for all ages and varied abilities. He specialises in introducing people to music and helping them to get started on their own musical journey. He also loves to help more advanced students develop and sharpen their own skills.
Areas that can be included in lessons are:
- Technical areas of performance and playing
- Crafting their own sound on the instrument
- Instrument maintenance and upkeep
- How to apply the use of sound effects in the most efficient way
- Help in playing with other musicians
- Guidance in how to develop your own band.
- He enables students to develop aspects of playing that he believes people often overlook as he thinks they make a surprisingly positive difference.
James is also happy to teach one off lessons in preparation for exams, studio time and touring in order to help students gain the most from their own music endeavours.
Teaching in Guitar
James also teaches other styles of six-string guitar using the same techniques and sensibilities. He does this for beginners to intermediate, for all ages. His specialist teachings including classical, acoustic and rock.
James teaches in just about all genres and has a strong belief in not limiting yourself as a musician as every style has great aspects to learn from. However, his main personal experience lies in Rock, Pop, Folk and Death Metal.
James' lessons will be practical based and he wants to get you playing as quickly as possible. He has a very person centred approach to teaching and can help by understanding your specific needs in order to tailor an individual lesson plan. He has an encouraging style that brings out the best in his students. He has a track record in making his musical teachings both logical and understandable, and together he and his students will work towards becoming rounded musicians.
A first hours lesson with James would be structured something like this:
Begin with a short conversation regarding the aims of the student. (5min)
An introduction to the instrument e.g how it works, its uses in music etc. (10min)
The correct posture and playing technique when handling the instrument. (20min)
Basic goal-related technical practice for the student to take away. (20min)
A brief summary of first lesson and any questions answered. (5min)
James will make a point of practising things in the correct way from the start in order to help you progress as far and possible and fulfil their own potential, whilst making sure you find the lessons fun and enjoyable. James can provide instruments for use within the first few lessons, but with an understanding that the student will make efforts to acquire their own. He is more than willing to help with this also.
James believes there are no shortcuts to becoming a competent musician but with the right attitude towards learning you will be surprised how quickly you can pick it up! His lessons can also include the use of Ukuleles to help you gain a quicker understanding of the instrument and playing with others.
