About Jo P
"If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough"
I aim to enable my students to explore their own individuality, through a good understanding of the building blocks that form the backdrop of what will become your voice. The best thing we can bring to music is that we are individuals, I have learnt this through 15 years as a professional musician. With a knowledge of theory to enable us to grow our own language, we can nurture the individual behind the instrument.
My first lesson always involves identifying where a student is in their ability, and usually involves reassuring them that they are not badly in need of lessons! There is often a lot already there to work with. So it's about contextualising, and me learning about you and how I feel I can help you achieve your goals.
I tend to find as I come from a playing background, and I'm easy going, that I can teach in a very flexible way. Taking music you are already interested in as the backdrop for contextualising theory or content, really helps with this too. If you are not learning alien music constantly, but relating theory to your natural interests/listening patterns, then 'light bulb' moments can be much more likely.
I'm formally trained and have experience touring, gigging, and recording. From Arena's to London's West End, and everything in between.
