About Josh E

Josh is a professional musician based in Leeds, UK. Since graduating from Leeds College of Music with a Bachelor’s degree in Popular Music Performance, he has established himself as a working freelance musician. Josh performs all over the UK with various projects as well as teaching and songwriting for clients.

Josh has shared the stage at events with world renowned artists such as Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Heather Small (M People) and Carol Decker (T’Pau)! He has also studied under professional session guitarist Al Cherry, increasing his guitar and music theory skills.

Experience in the industry, as well as in education, has given Josh the necessary skills and knowledge to pass on to students. These skills coupled with his friendly and patient nature make him a great teacher.

Teaching in Guitar, Composition and Music Theory
Josh teaches all ages and abilities. Everyone is welcome, including beginners! Josh offers graded exams for RSL (Rockschool) and Trinity College.

Lessons will focus on various musical skills and elements that are fundamental to the student's development as a musician. These elements include technique, repertoire, aural skills, fretboard knowledge, harmony, melody, music theory and composition to name a few!

A typical lesson with Josh will introduce something new to the student, then show a practical approach to the idea, and finally to play something that incorporates these ideas. Josh is very keen on using high-quality recording in lessons, sending them to students afterwards so they can hear their progress.

Josh doesn’t just teach guitar! Come along for lessons on music theory and songwriting/composition.

Josh is experienced at teaching nearly all genres of music. He is most comfortable with Pop, Rock, Blues, Jazz and Funk. Josh only teaches classical guitar for beginners and does not submit students for classical grading.

First Lesson
The first lesson always starts with a chat. Josh feels that it’s important to get to know his students and what aspirations they have regarding music and guitar playing. This means he can start to tailor his lessons to individual students. Josh will then look to assess the student's capabilities so he can figure out the best way to help them achieve their goals. Making students feel comfortable is a priority, there will be no judgement or expectation from Josh whatsoever! The first lesson would end with learning a simple piece of music that the student is comfortable with.

Beginners are very welcome and Josh makes sure they feel really comfortable. They don’t need to bring anything! However, a guitar of their own is encouraged in order to ensure practice and progression outside of lessons. Josh has guitars that students can use temporarily if they are keen to try it out and let him know before the lesson.
