Luke trained at the Guildford School of Acting, graduating in 1999 with a Diploma in Musical Theatre and studied again in 2012, graduating in 2013 with a 1st Class Honours Degree in Theatre. His first professional engagement was with P&O Cruises on board four of P&O’s fleet as an Entertainment’s Officer. Luke has worked as a freelance musician on the London production of Les Miserables; including the 30th and 25th anniversary performances at the Queen’s Theatre. In addition to this, the London and UK tour of Miss Saigon, Les Miserables & The Phantom of the Opera as well as rehearsal pianist for Flashdance, choreographed by Arlene Phillips for the Shaftesbury Theatre. Luke’s most recent teaching and vocal coaching employment has been for a theatre arts company in Epsom, on both Foundation and Diploma courses and for Bodens College in New Barnet.
Luke teaches both Piano and Singing, from beginners through to advanced. Whatever your experience, the lesson will be tailored to your needs. You may want to continue to develop the skills you already have, improve your repertoire for college auditions/performances, improve your music theory/listening skills for examinations or start from the very beginning!
If you are starting piano from the very beginning you will learn notation, rhythm and technique, along with different styles of music and how to put it all together. You may already have some experience playing the piano, so the initial lessons would be focused on where you are at and how to proceed from that point; this may include going over some of the basics. For those students who would like to take piano examinations, this can be done through ABRSM.
Luke has taught all abilities and all ages from 8 years old through to adults as well as professional actors and singers who work in musical theatre. Your lesson will be tailored to your own personal requirements, be it for personal enjoyment, voice/technique, an upcoming performance, exam, audition or a college application. For professional actors and singers, a one-off coaching session might be needed to go through a specific song or repertoire.
Luke’s background is predominantly in musical theatre. He has a vast knowledge of this musical genre as well as a huge collection of repertoire, largely owing to having worked with his father in a music shop in Oxford! Having learnt the piano from an early age and Luke worked his way through the ABRSM Piano Examinations and has a good knowledge of the requirements needed for these exams.
Your first lesson is very much about getting to know you and what it is you wish to achieve; be it learning the piano from scratch or singing a few scales. If you already have experience singing or playing the piano, listening to you sing or play something that you are comfortable with will help establish a way of working that suits both teacher and student. For professional actors & singers, your needs may vary, in preparation for upcoming auditions/rehearsals.
It is always good to get to know about any experience you have had and to get the ball rolling by singing or playing something; it can be from any genre of music and does not have to be a perfect performance. You can talk about the type of music that you like to listen to or sing and play along to. If you can play the piano by ear, then playing a tune you have learnt this way (without reading music) is fine! Alternatively, going through the notes on the piano and learning where middle C is, is good place to start.
