About Matthew A
Singer, Musician and Actor with extensive teaching experience in one to one lessons, stage schools and choirs.
- MA (Music Theatre) Royal Central School Of Speech and Drama
- Bmus(Hons) Birmingham Conservatoire
- Grade 8 Violin and Grade 5 Music Theory
I believe in a positive but firm style of teaching, always aiming to inspire students to take ownership of their practice time and their growing love of music. I have a lot of stage experience as a musician and also as a singer, having performed in various styles including classical, musical theatre and pop around the UK and around the world and wish to bring this energy and passion to others.
I have loved music and performing ever since I was 8 when I began my own violin lessons. Music formed the core of much of my younger years, performing in orchestras and string ensembles. I've always believed that a keen ear and passion for also listening to music can help greatly improve everyone's musical journey. This lead me on to train in Birmingham and later London and develop my singing skills. I believe it is never too late to focus and build up a good technique in your desired skill, I didn't start singing until my early 20s and now I am a professional performer.
Lessons with Matthew
Matthew Teaches Violin Beginner to Grade 8, Singing Beginner to Intermediate level and Music Theory at Beginner level (Grades 1,2)
Teaching in Violin
Matthew focuses on the students technique, developing exercises and scales each lesson and building on to different pieces, with repertoire recommendations. He can prepare people for graded exams. A love of classical music both old and new is important so Matthew believes in positive encouragement to listen to as much music as possible.
Teaching in Singing
Matthew offers various styles of singing, but is focussed mostly on Musical Theatre or Pop Singing, He does not teach Opera. Lessons will always put the students vocal needs first but encourage students to push themselves and try new things. Showing younger students how singing well and safely feels and sounds as opposed to developing bad technique. Encouraging students to avoid imitating others voices that they hear and develop their own natural sound.
Teaching in Music Theory
For beginner level alongside instrumental studies. Matthew can develop students understanding of key signatures, notation and general understanding of music theory.
Matthew teaches in various genres of music. Violin focuses on classical music but can include folk. Singing focuses on Musical Theatre and Pop, but can include Classical.
Your first lesson with me will begin with a little chat about your musical experience, do you play other instruments, what music do you listen to? For example. So that I can get to know you better. If it is your first time singing and playing I will go through the fundamental things to know about holding the instrument and good posture etc. If you can already play I will do a short warm up with you and then play through a short piece of music that you would like to present and I can give notes and tips on how to improve.
In general every lesson will involve scales and occasionally sight reading to keep these skills going along side your chosen pieces.
If you are a beginner you have nothing to worry about. Just bring your Violin and bring a notepad and pencil. If you are a singer then please bring a simple song that you think you can have a go at singing, sheet music would be preferable but we can work from a backing track, or even if you just tell me the song I can try my best to find a copy of it. For singing beginners it's important for me to know what sort of music you love listening to.
