About James B

James prides himself on being a professional, dedicated teacher with a kind, empathetic in nature. He has taught both children and adults privately for several years and always ensures his lessons are fun, engaging and tutored around individual learning needs.It is vital that students feel confident and comfortable within the teaching environment and are allowed to make mistakes in order to progress. Lessons are student lead and are adapted to their choice of both repertoires and teaching methods. James is also proficient at tutoring ABRSM Music Theory, and integrates elements into all instrumental lessons.

Graduating with First Class Honours in Music from University, James is an alto and tenor jazz saxophonist, classical clarinettist and pop/rock drummer.
James has performed with jazz artists and ensembles such as Sam Brasher Trio, Charged Particles feat. Paul McCandless and the Nigel Price Trio and lead Hertfordshire Classical Wind Sinfonia for two years. Alongside his passion for teaching, James currently works in the events industry performing jazz saxophone and performs lead drums in his alt-pop band ZELAH. A deep understanding and interest in a full range of genres has allowed James to build up and extensive range of repertoire, varying from Mozart to Charlie Parker to The Arctic Monkeys.

Alto Saxophone - Grade 8 Distinction (ABRSM)
Clarinet - Grade 8 Merit (ABRSM)
Drum Kit - Grade 8 Distinction (Rockschool)

Teaching Saxophone

James teaches Alto and Tenor jazz Saxophone to all ages and abilities. Lessons are structured around ABRSM syllabuses up to grade 5 and aim to encourage student goal setting. Students are required to provide their own instrument and learning materials.

Lessons will focus on:

Technique - Breathing, Tonguing/Slurring, Tone/Sound
Scales and Modes
Jazz Theory
Rhythm and Improvising Exercises
Performance Skills
Repertoire Development
How to Practise/Warm Up

Teaching in Clarinet

James teaches classical Clarinet to all ages and abilities. Lessons are structured around ABRSM syllabuses up to grade 8 and aim to encourage student goal setting. Students are required to provide their own instrument and learning materials

Lessons will focus on:

Technique - Breathing, Tonguing/Slurring, Tone/Sound
Scales and Theory
Rhythm and Sight Reading Exercises
Performance Skills
Repertoire Development
How to Practise/Warm Up

Teaching Drums

James teaches drum kit to all ages and abilities. Lessons are structured around the Rock School syllabuses up to grade 8 and aim to encourage student goal setting. students are required to provide their own instrument and learning materials

Lessons will focus on:

Technique - Stick Technique, Rudiments, Posture, Accents/Dynamics
Learning Drum Notation
Rhythm Exercises - Basic Strokes, Rolls, Ruffs and Paradiddles
Performance Skills
Repertoire Development
How to Practise/Warm Up

Teaching Music Theory

James teaches Music Theory to all ages and abilities. Lessons are structured around ABRSM syllabuses up to grade 5 and aim to encourage student goal setting. Students are required to provide advised educational materials.

Lessons will focus on:

Basic understanding of the keyboard
Note reading - treble and bass clefs
Key and time signatures
Rhythm
Chord structure
Cadences
Composition
Transposition

Genre

James teaches a diverse range of genres, including classical, jazz, latin, funk, soul and pop/rock and is open to new ideas and suggestions.

First Lesson

During the first lesson students are encouraged to perform their most recent piece within a friendly supportive environment. From this james is able to draw up a personal performance plan for future lessons to be based on, according to the students experience and interests.

Beginners

All beginners welcome! Any level of musical/ instrumental knowledge welcome!

All beginners will require their own instrument, as these cannot be borrowed due to hygiene reasons.
