About Sam Q.
Sam is a professional bass guitarist and double bassist based in Leeds. Since graduating from Leeds College of Music in 2014 he has become a highly active member of the city's thriving music scene. He frequently tours the UK and has also performed internationally in France, Germany, Holland, Belgium and Ireland. Sam is an enthusiastic tutor and has been teaching bass privately for over 5 years. He has worked as an assistant tutor on the Falmouth Jazz Summer School and has also led workshops in jazz, folk and popular music with various ensembles.
Teaching in Bass Guitar and Double Bass
Sam teaches bass guitar and double bass at all levels from the ages of 12 upwards.
Sam tries to relate what is covered in lessons to real life performance situations and will aim to explain how lesson topics can be applied in a range of circumstances. He is happy to guide students through grade exams but also happy to focus on particular aspects a student may want to work on outside of these syllabuses. He is most familiar with the Rockschool syllabus for electric bass and also an experienced double bass player. He specialises in jazz, in particular the construction of bass lines and solos over chord changes. He is also comfortable teaching essential core fundamental skills such as technique, scale/fingerboard knowledge, harmonic knowledge, sight reading, ear training, time-feel, recommended listening, practice tips and composition. He is able to provide students with hand outs and will be able to design and recommend exercises to students to help practice topics covered in lessons.
Sam specialises in jazz but can also teach all styles of popular music at an advanced level.
In a first lesson a student can a expect a brief introductory chat about what they want to get out of having bass lessons and whether they have any specific goals they want to aim for. After that, Sam aims to get students playing as soon as possible with some fun exercises and popular bass lines!
If you’re a beginner then all you have to do is bring enthusiasm and a will to learn! If you don’t own a bass guitar or double bass yet, Sam has instruments and amplifiers he can lend you for your initial lessons. He’ll start with some simple bass lines from popular tunes and aim to have you playing along with your first song in the first lesson!
