About Stephen B.

Music is Stephen’s passion as well as his career, and he does his very best to inspire his students to enjoy music as much as he does. Stephen encourages and enables students of all levels to express themselves through music, whether that’s in violin, music theory or composition. Stephen has benefited from music education for many years, and he’s passionate about teaching because it allows him to pass his love of music on to others. Stephen started playing the violin at age nine, and spent eight years studying violin at Chetham’s School of Music. He is active as a freelance violinist in orchestras and chamber groups throughout the North West. Stephen also studied music theory and composition to an advanced level as part of his music degree at the University of Oxford, and he holds a master’s degree in composition from the Royal Northern College of Music.

Teaching in Violin

Stephen teaches Violin to students of all ages and levels. He is happy to work with students towards the ABRSM graded exams, or outside of this framework. Stephen finds a good balance of technical and repertoire work that is appropriate to each student, helping them to realise their musical goals. Technical topics, scales and sight reading are always taught in a way that *connects* them to real life music-making – making the process fun and enabling students to play more confidently and expressively. Above all, Stephen is passionate about helping students to engage with and enjoy the music they play, whatever their level.

Teaching in Music Theory

Stephen is happy to provide music theory tuition, whether alongside violin / composition lessons or separately, for example while working towards the ABRSM theory exams. He is mindful of the fact that some aspects of music theory can seem daunting and confusing at first, so his tuition is focused squarely on real-world applications in order to enrich students’ experience of music-making. This stems from Stephen’s own experience – he consistently finds that understanding music theory plays a key part in creating more expressive and engaging music.

Teaching in Composition

Stephen really enjoys hearing students’ compositions and providing his input. He believes that composing is a very personal process, and that there is no *right* way to compose! Stephen’s composition lessons are focussed on exploring the music the student has written, providing suggestions and id...
