About Tom B.
Tom is a professional drummer, educator and producer with international experience touring, recording and performing. His experience spans multiple genres, from playing in New York with international touring Folk bands to playing tuned percussion with orchestras at Royal Albert Hall, or recording an Electronic Pop album in Poland. He has a strong grounding in education with a First Class BA (Hons) and a Masters Degree in Music from Leeds College of Music.
Tom’s teaching experience covers a vast array of styles, age groups and ability levels. From primary school children, to adults, ensembles, those with learning difficulties, and even one of his own university drum tutors! Tom’s easy going and patient personality allows him to connect with students of all ages and abilities.
Tom’s focus for every student is enjoyment - to have fun with music. Learning an instrument should be an enjoyable experience, and each person learns in their own way. Tom believes that music allows our creativity to grow and gives access to a new way to communicate with others. His teaching style is flexible, fun and focused on the learner’s needs, in a friendly and safe environment.
Teaching in Drums
Tom teaches drum kit from absolute beginners to advanced/professional level at any age.
He is a very patient and encouraging tutor, and loves seeing his students excel. With a range of teaching techniques, Tom aims to help his students develop their technique, musicianship and creativity. Timing is another focus for drumming - making sure your groove feels good and you can play in time with others - Music is a shared art form and therefore Tom encourages students to play along to any music as much as possible.
A key area for Tom is to inspire creativity, pushing the student to come up their own ideas. This encourages the student to discover new sounds, patterns and new music themselves, which promotes self-led learning and practice.
Tom is experienced at teaching graded exams with multiple boards such as Trinity Guildhall and Rockschool, as well as those working toward Music GCSE, A levels and even Degree level. All students will be presented with a form of written music as Tom believes it is a great skill to have.
Over multiple lessons, Tom will set the students attainable goals. These goals will vary in difficulty, length of time to achieve and style. There will be a stretch goal for the term, perhaps a specific pattern/rudiment, a section of a song that the student wants to play or to take a Graded exam. Working to attain this goal over the course of a term shows the student their ability to progress and shows them that improvement is attainable.
Tom always encourages a student to not just stick to the limitations of a written part, but to try and make their own musical mark and be creative. This allows them to express themselves on their instrument which will make them want to play even more.
As students, personalities and ages vary, Tom believes it is important to be accommodating for all situations and will change his approach dependent on the student’s needs.
Teaching in Ableton Live/Logic Pro X
Tom also teaches lessons on Ableton Live and Logic Pro X, from learning the basics to setting up a full live playback rig for a tour.
With experience of using Ableton Live and Logic Pro X for composition, production and live performance, Tom can deliver lessons that allow you to get the most of out these programmes. Students will be guided through key elements of the programme, covering basic navigation to advanced techniques.
Tom can also cover skills necessary for A Level and GCSE Music technology.

Tom believes it is key to show every student the joy of making music. To achieve this, the lesson would unfold by understanding the students’s taste for music, experience, individual requirements and understanding any of the students requirements. This may involve asking questions of the student whilst also giving the student some insight into Tom’s personal journey and experience as a musician. This allows me to gain an understanding of their goals, current knowledge and personality.
For Drums, I would then ask the student to play something for me - anything. This is to gauge the students ability - technique, creativity, feel, touch, time and to see how they play. With this information, I can draw on my experience to provide them with a goal.
Nothing is more exciting than starting a new instrument. Tom aims to keep lessons fun and enjoyable whilst arming beginners with the necessary techniques and skills to be able to get playing as fast as possible! Lessons will be relaxed, simple and at your own pace dictated by your individual needs and tastes. Tom will discuss your personal musical influences and likes, and will provide fun and progressive exercises to get you going.
