About Tom W.
Tom is a skilled pianist and teacher. He is a talented musician in his own right, with a first class Music degree from Oxford University. The rigorous training at Oxford gave Tom supplemented his foundation in the jazz and pop styles with a deep understanding of Classical music and music education. Since his teenage years he has been performing both solo and with a variety of jazz duos, trios, pop bands and original projects in addition to having conducted two orchestras and recording studio experience (both sides of the microphone!). With nearly five years of teaching and tutoring experience under his belt already, his lessons are sure to be fun, friendly, and engaging!
Beginners to advanced (grade 8). Teaching will be tailored to individual needs, wants and ambitions and might typically follow the ABRSM syllabus of graded examinations, however a more personal program of study can be decided upon should the student not wish to sit exams. Lessons will include music appreciation, ear training, technical exercise such as scales and arpeggios, learning of repertoire, music theory and creative approaches to practicing.
Beginners to advanced. Teaching will be tailored to the individual and will focus on the many styles and genres that are associated with jazz/pop piano; jazz, blues, latin, pop and gospel. Lessons will include music appreciation, ear training, exploration of chords and harmony, improvisation, creative arranging, music theory and lots of fun! If students would like to sit exams, Tom would typically follow the ABRSM jazz piano syllabus.
For Theory examinations, Tom can teach up to and beyond ABRSM Grade 8, with Grade 5 being the standard often required to progress further in instrumental study, though other examination boards are available.
For those wishing to realise a long-held ambition, I am patient, good-humoured and very enthusiastic to help you learn from scratch!
