About Ben R
Ben is an award winning, conservatoire trained pianist, composer and teacher in London. Originally from Yorkshire, Ben is a friendly, warm teacher who has experience teaching students at all levels and ages, regardless of skillset or background. His training in Composition from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance (with a secondary focus on Piano) has led Ben to have a lucrative freelance career since leaving education. He’s performed and had his works played at the Southbank Centre, Edinburgh Fringe Festival, The Place Theatre, and Lyric Hammersmith to name a few. Ben is very passionate about music education and believes there should be no limits to what each individual student can achieve.
Teaching in piano
Ben teaches piano for beginners to advanced students of all ages, having experience in working with students of all abilities and ages.
In the piano lesson we will cover:
- Accompaniment
- Note reading
- Rhythm exercises
- Musical expression
- Improvisation
- Possible singing and piano
- Working towards doing grades (if the student wishes)
- Fun and interesting repertoire (part prescribed by Ben and also including any requests the student may have)
Teaching in composition
Ben is primarily a composer having received world-class training at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, taught under Errollyn Wallen and Stephen Montague. He’s had premieres in the Resolution Dance Festival at The Place, in theatre at Lyric Hammersmith, Theatre Royal Stratford East and Battersea Arts Centre, and most recently Ben has had a premiere with National Youth Theatre. Ben is also a singer/songwriter with a strong knowledge in traditional and contemporary songs. He is able to start teaching students of any ability and age.
In the lesson we would cover:
- Harmony
- Techniques
- Orchestration
- Arranging
- Improvisation
- History
Usually, the student would bring Ben works they are working on and they can have a discussion about the piece(s), but Ben can also set composition tasks to help further the student’s aims.
