About David J. P.
David graduated from The University of Surrey with a 2:1 in Creative Music Technology. David is a music composer/producer (under the moniker ‘Tarquin’) and a music teacher. As a producer and DJ David’s music has been played on Radio1, he has DJ’d all over Europe and has had his music reviewed in The Wire, Dj Mag and Fact. He creates original music which he regularly releases independently and on reputable labels such as Domino, Planet Mu and Big Dada.
David teaches music production and DJ skills alongside piano and acoustic / electric guitar for ages 10 and up. Each lesson is tailored to the student’s needs and goals. David’s kind and considered manner means a subject he loves is effectively and conscientiously conveyed. He has taught all ages, abilities and characters from all around the globe!
Teaching in Music Production / DJ
David’s lessons include:
- Software / DAW overviews,
- Synthesis,
- Sampling,
- Mixing,
- Production/composition techniques, theory etc.
David specialises in electronic, club and urban music but can teach almost any genre – the fundamental techniques are applicable to all styles.
For DJ lessons, The student will be expected to provide decks and will have to prepare music (at least 5 songs) they want to mix with beforehand.
Teaching in Piano
David’s lessons in piano cover:
- Basic finger techniques, Hand positioning,

- Left and right hand technique,
- Note positions,
- Songs and Pieces of the students choosing, as well as useful simple songs, Classical and pop styles covered.
Teaching in Guitar

On the guitar David teaches: rock, blues, punk, jazz, funk. Beginners will need to bring their guitar if they are travelling to David’s home. Please note that David does not teach classical guitar.
Teaching in Music Theory
David can also offer music theory lessons. These include:
- Scales
- Chords
- Key and time signatures
- Harmonic frameworks etc
First Lesson
A first lesson with David will include a friendly introduction and then a chat going over the student’s goals and desires within their subject of choice. The lesson will then progress on to simple introductory exercises and information about the instrument or the software. From the beginning David will always ensure the student leaves with something to play, practice or work on.
