About Emilia M

Emilia Mårtensson is a London-based Swedish vocalist, composer and educator of considerable repute. After her three latest album releases Emilia has built a well-deserved reputation as one of the most exciting young vocalists on the UK Jazz scene and she was awarded ‘Vocalist of the Year-2016′ at The Parliamentary Jazz Awards. Emilia studied at Trinity College of Music where she specialised in Jazz Vocals, Piano and Improvisation.
Qualification: BMus (Hons).

Emilia is also a passionate educator and has founded ‘Beyond Vocals’, a platform for new aspiring singers with an interest in Jazz, Folk, Experimental and Improvised music. She is a regular part of the teaching faculty of the Sligo Jazz Project, has delivered workshops for Ljubljana and London Jazz festival, and has been running her own highly acclaimed jazz vocal summer course in the beautiful town of Izola , Slovenia for the last 5 years. Emilia is a highly respected and experienced vocal tutor and teaches regularly at Southampton University and occasionally at Trinity College of Music and The Guildhall School of Drama and Music where she sits on the examination panel. She specialises in Jazz, Folk and Vocal Improvisation.

Emilia says: “Music has always been my whole life. I started singing and taking lessons myself at the age of 5 and I always knew I wanted to dedicate my life to singing. My dream was never to be simply a performer, but to explore the art of singing, with a strong focus on the voice and what it can express. I love working with singers from all backgrounds and levels and I enjoy navigating my way through peoples’ personal journeys, whatever their level, aim or direction may be.”

Teaching in vocals
Emilia’s lessons are aimed at singers of all levels who have an interest in exploring Jazz, Pop and Folk repertoire (Age 14 and up).
Lessons are very much tailored for the individual.

What a session might involve:
- Technical exercises aimed towards strengthening and improving breath control, tuning, tone and stamina.
- Exploring your own personal sound and expression through repertoire and improvisation.
- Interpretation of a wide range of repertoire.
- Learning about how to communicate your musical ideas both verbally and musically. I.e how to lead your band, write out charts etc.
- Perfomance Technique
- Song writing
- Basic Piano Skills and Music Theory
