About Jennifer E G

Qualified, professional musician and tutor (saxophone and melodion) based in London. Musician, writer, magician and Monty Python lover, I teach and play saxophone and melodeon all around the capital. I believe everyone can learn and enjoy playing music and I love teaching it!

I've got an MA in jazz saxophone and I'm fluent in French and in English.

I've worked for years in Belgium as a musician and actress in musical theatre plays, and I founded 2 bands on the continent before moving to the UK. I'm currently living in London and playing in several projects - one of which is the Boneshaker, with the fantastic cellist Rupert Gillett - as well as doing function and solo gigs.

I am very empathetic which enables me to connect very well with students. During lessons I will adapt to the student's level: with beginners, I will go through the basics (posture, basic music theory), while I will try to adapt more to the student's wishes if they are at a more advanced level already. I will put great emphasis on musicality, which is I believe the most important thing to develop as musician —technique comes second in my opinion (although we will of course be developing technique too!).

Teaching in Saxophone
I have been playing the saxophone for 18 years now and love to share my love for this wonderful instrument.
In a typical lesson I will address:

- Sound
- Correct position on the instrument
- Tunes adapted to the student's level and interests
- Musical expression and performance
- Note and rhythm exercises

Teaching in piano
I teach the piano from beginners up to intermediate level and the lessons include:

- Discovery of the keyboard and simple melodies
- Note reading
- Ear training
- Rhythm exercises
- Musical expression

Teaching in melodion
I teach the melodion (G/C or D/G) for all levels. I usually start off with tunes, that we will learn by ear, and work on the theory and the technique of the instrument through the tunes themselves. My repertoire includes traditional and original tunes from the UK & continental Europe.

Genre
I'll endeavour to adapt to whatever genre the student is most interested in, though my key areas of expertise are folk music, traditional music & jazz.
