About Katy R

Katy is a dynamic and enthusiastic teacher who inspires confidence and aims to nurture a real love for music in her students. With a BA (Hons) Music degree and a MA in Ethnomusicology, she is a versatile musician with a thorough grounding in a wide variety of musical styles. She loves to share this passion in her teaching, and currently teaches students from a really wide range of backgrounds and ages (from 7 to 70+!). She is also a professional freelance musician, mainly (but not exclusively!) within the genre of folk and traditional music. When not teaching or performing, she loves experimenting with new styles and learning new instruments.

Teaching in flute/saxophone/whistle/clarinet/acoustic guitar/vocals
- Katy teaches flute and saxophone to students of any level aged 8+
- She teaches whistle to students of any age and level
- She teaches acoustic guitar, piano and singing at beginner/intermediate level to students of any age
- She teaches clarinet at beginner/intermediate level to students aged 8+

Katy approaches her lessons as a partnership with students; helping you to work out your goals, and using her skills and experience as a teacher/professional musician to allow you to achieve these. Above all, she aims to make learning and playing your instrument a really enriching and enjoyable experience.

Katy’s lessons are tailored towards each student, but generally she sets out help you gain a really broad and comprehensive understanding of music. Lessons can encompass not only developing good technique, reading notation and aspects of music theory, but also being comfortable playing by ear - overall, developing the skills which will allow you to become a really confident, competent and creative musician.

She is happy to help you work towards graded examinations in flute/saxophone (up to Grade 8) and clarinet (up to Grade 5).

Katy is happy to teach any genre. She specialises in folk music, and was classically trained, but also has experience of playing and teaching a broad range of styles, including even more the unusual (e.g. klezmer).

First lesson
This is all about putting you at ease, getting to know a bit about you and your musical experience (maybe over a cuppa!), and together starting to think about what you’d like to get out of your lessons. If you are new to your instrument, Katy will start with some basics to make sure that you have a grasp of how to hold/blow/play your instrument, to ensure that you are able to practice at home on your own. If you’re not completely new to your instrument, she might ask if you’d like to play a piece which you enjoy/are already familiar with. Overall, she would try to make it a really enjoyable and worthwhile experience, and would not ask you to play anything that puts you out of your comfort zone.

Just bring yourself and your instrument! (If you don’t have your own instrument yet, there may be a possibility that Katy can loan you an instrument for a short time). If you’ve got any tutor books, or songs or tunes you’d particularly like to learn or work towards, bring these along too, but don’t worry if not.

By only working with quality, professional music tutors, we can guarantee the highest standard of music education.

As a complete beginner I felt in need of some one to one feedback. I was not convinced that on-line lessons would work. But Katy has been great. Both stretching and encouraging pitched just right. Spot on diagnosis and advice.

Katy is flexible, positive and patient, but she nudges me towards overcoming my weaknesses.  As she is also hard-working and musically versatile, Katy adapts the lessons to my tastes and needs.  I recommend her to potential pupils of any age.

Singing lessons with Katy have been great so far - she's always patient and encouraging, which is really helpful as I find singing quite daunting, and has a great knowledge of folk tunes that I'm really enjoying learning.
