About Ray M

Ray is an experienced performer, teacher and music writer, playing in duos to Jazz and symphony orchestras. He has taught various age groups and standards. He a music graduate and post grade 8. To keep things fresh, he has recently taken the top grade ABRSM jazz exam and is always seeking to improve his own standard. Ray always keeps up to date with current developments in instrument technology and teaching ideas, and tailor lessons to each student and their learning style.

Learning Music with Ray
Ray is a Trumpet/Cornet specialist (including Piccolo, Eb/D and C) and able to teach all ages and abilities. He also teaches other brass instruments to intermediate level. The structure of lessons will vary depending upon the individual, their learning style and needs. The main emphasis of a lesson with Ray is that it should be fun but you learn something in a relaxed fashion. Graded exams are an option, but by no means a must! His teaching style is a mixture gained from both professional teachers and the methods of Claude Gordon and Schlossberg, among many others.

Genre
Ray is able to teach most genres, working regularly with a local brass group (Soprano and Bb Cornet) and orchestra. Ray is a Big Band jazz specialist (Lead, Jazz and section pads).

First lesson
The first lesson will be part observation and part instruction. Initially, when starting out, Ray believes it is so important to get the fundamentals right first: Breathing; Holding the instrument/posture and producing the sound. The next steps are learning how to use the valves and change the pitch, coupled with associated theory and advice on how to look after your instrument. Ray will talk about your playing experience and if you have anything particular you hope to achieve, or if you have anything specific you want to look at. If you've played before, Ray will look at observe you playing, and then discuss and explain why (if any) adjustments should be made. If you have not played before, he will teach the basics.

Please bring a B flat Trumpet and Trumpet mouthpiece, with a notebook and pen/pencil. If you decide you want to continue beyond lesson 1, Ray advises you to get a music stand, a copy of ‘A tune a day‘ for Trumpet book and a Metronome or download a Metronome app. You may also consider a practice mute.
