About Nicholas J

Nicholas has extensive experience in teaching at all levels, from beginners through to diploma level students, some of whom have made their living from teaching and playing music.

Nicholas was educated in London at Trinity College of Music, and played for many state occasions whilst at the Royal Naval College in Greenwich, combining this work with teaching privately at home, and school teaching across the West Midlands. He also played at Peterborough Cathedral and directed the music at the Oratory in Birmingham for many years.

Nicholas has always been passionate about music in many genres, from an early age. He very much focuses on classical styles. As a teacher, he is committed to explaining how to achieve the end goal, rather than just demonstrating how it should be played.

Lessons with Nicholas
Nicholas teaches students in piano, organ and singing from beginner level to advanced. He also teaches ABRSM theory of music, with no age limits! As an examiner for ABRSM, Nicholas takes a very detailed approach to help his students reach their desired goals. Nicholas always looks to help students achieve a warm tone from the piano, and to make practise interesting and beneficial.

Nicholas doesn’t have a set teaching method - he promises to tailor lessons to the individual’s goals and abilities.

A typical set of lessons heading toward a graded exam or diploma would focus carefully on scale practice and how this usefully incorporates into the performance and learning of syllabus pieces. Some duet work and a few aural tests to finish!

Genres
Nicholas is a classically trained musician, but teaches happily in most genres.

First lesson
A typical first lesson would include an opportunity to get to know Nicholas and see that lessons are not as daunting as they might appear. However, some playing and a tune or two will hopefully be under the fingers, if a beginner, by the end.

Beginners
Nicholas can suggest a first book. Otherwise, just bring enthusiasm! Nicholas promises there will be lots of fun along the way, and that he will always progress at the pace suitable for the student. All mistakes are information and there is to be no unnecessary criticism, just encouragement and help!

If piano lessons are sought, it is essential to have access to an instrument, preferably your own.
